My feet were toasty warm while Rascal snoozed on them. I had to admit that it was a rather pleasant sensation to have the little dog snuggled next to me. He only slept for about twenty minutes before getting up and sniffing around. From my earlier experience, I knew that meant it was time to get him outside.

I shuffled the little dog out the back door just in time. He peed on the cherry blossom tree that I had nurtured since we moved into this house. "That's a good boy!" I praised the puppy, since at least he had gone outside. We could work later on exactly where outside it was appropriate to go.

Shaking my head in disbelief, I pondered the fact that I had just talked to a dog like it was a human being and praised it for urinating on my favorite tree. What in the world was coming over me?

"I've been working on housetraining them," a little boy yelled over the fence at me. He was outside scooping up poop, while two of Donovan's puppies tried to bite the scooping rake.

I was startled to see him, since I hadn't realized anyone else was outside. The surge of disappointment I felt surprised me too. I hadn't realized that Donovan had a son. Was there a wife, too? I shook my head, trying to clear out those thoughts. What difference did it make if he was married and had a family? My husband had just passed away. The last thing I needed right now was another man in my life.

I followed Rascal to the fence. He was wiggling his little butt, clearly excited to see the boy. "Rascal is almost as smart as my dog, Rowdy." The freckle-faced boy grinned, revealing a missing front tooth.

"Oh, you get to keep one of them?" I asked him, charmed, despite myself.

"Yeah," he nodded enthusiastically. "Van is going to help talk my parents into it," he revealed.

Relief surged through me. Why on earth was I relieved to hear that the boy wasn't Donovan's? All of the emotional turmoil in my life lately must have scrambled my brain.

"It shouldn't be too hard of a sell," he revealed conspiratorially, sounding remarkably grown up. "My parents are talking about getting a divorce, so they will be looking for a way to soften the blow for me."

"Oh," I wasn't sure what else to say. Donovan emerged from his back door, saving me from having to comment further.

"Ah, you've met Jackson."

I nodded in answer, even though the boy and I hadn't really been introduced.

Turning to Jackson, Donovan told him, "That's enough for tonight. Same time tomorrow?"

"Yep!" The boy was obviously enthusiastic to return. He faced me and added, "Van is letting me work for the money to buy Rowdy!"

I hid my surprise at this revelation and tried to sound enthusiastic when I said, "Great."

The boy didn't seem to notice anything amiss and scampered into the house to head home. I turned on Donovan. "You're making him work to earn a thousand dollars to buy a puppy?" Some unfamiliar part of me felt outraged at the thought.
